Day 72. Two days and one pound to go.
As I write this, I am in the 43rd hour of a 48-hour fast. I have attempted this feat a few other times during Mission 44 but I have never made it to the end of the journey. I am determined to get there this time.
Fasting is not something that I use as a quick-fix to lose a bunch of weight. It's an important tool that's meant to help rid my cells of the glucose or glycogen or whatever garbage is saturating them and causing symptoms of type 2 diabetes. Dr. Jason Fung presents intermittent fasting in The Diabetes Code, the book I'm using to guide my weight-loss during Mission 44. While I was completing Project 43 I would fast from about 7 pm to 11 am the next day, every day, and I've maintained a similar schedule during Mindblown. I didn't think that I would ever want to try one of the 48-hour fasts Dr. Fung recommends. I didn't really think I would need to, either, and I saw it as more of a nuclear option than anything else.
At the end of Project 43 I suddenly found myself creeping above the progress line. I decided to try the 48-hour fast since it was one of the few recommendations of Dr. Fung's I hadn't yet followed. It worked, and I achieved my phase one goals.
Earlier this week, I experienced this:
301.4 may not seem like a big deal if you've been following my occasionally-updated blog. My last post on Day 62 featured a screenshot that listed my weight at 304.5. So why would I want to cry over 301.4?
In the middle of the ten days between that post and this one, I had achieved a major milestone:
My DietBet post and picture say it all.
The first sub-300 weigh-in in more than ten years and I had let it slip away. It was heartbreaking, but I only had myself to blame. Here are the two days of my journal that immediately precede the 301.4 weigh-in:
Seasons 52 coffee dessert? Frosted donut? Girl Scout cookies?
Biscuits and Gravy TWICE?!
I could just imagine the insulin cramming my cells full of all the sugar I was consuming. I got back on track and began to see my weight come back down again, but I knew I needed to address the sugar problem. My fast began after dinner on Day 70 and it will end at dinner tonight. I worked out today before my weigh-in, and arrived at a new low for Mission 44.
I recorded the new low on my chart as the official ending weight of the fast, and I'm happy to report that in addition to burning off a bunch of sugar, I am now back on track to achieve my goal for the six-week second phase that has been Mindblown.
Friday morning is going to be a big day for Mission 44. Mindblown will come to an end and I'll be able to celebrate another huge goal. Just as exciting, however, is that Friday is my yearly physical. I will report to my doctor for the first time since December 5. Last time I saw him I weighed 50 pounds more and posted an A1C that was dangerously high.
I'm expecting that his mind will be blown.

General disclaimers: In my posts I describe things that I am doing to reclaim my health based on what I know about myself. Please don't emulate my actions. I'm not a doctor, and when you read things in my blog they are not meant as advice to you or anyone else. They are simply a record of my own experience. Things like abandoning prescribed medicines and walking for miles while dealing with morbid obesity are bad ideas, but I'm an idiot and do them anyway. Don't be like me.
